megkésett rehabilitálása egy jelentős, ám önnön lehetőségeit kényszerűen kiteljesíteni
nem tudó irodalomtörténészi életműnek. A könyv először ugyanis igen
szerencsétlen időpontban, 1945-ban látott napvilágot, éppen abban az évben,
amikor a szerzőt – mondvacsinált okokból s egy törvénysértő igazolási
eljárás keretében – megfosztották szegedi főiskolai katedrájától, s
lehetetlenné tették, hogy oktatóként és irodalomtörténészként folytathassa a
pályáját. A kötet így voltaképpen visszhangtalanná vált, s a későbbi
irodalomtörténeti szakirodalomba nem is épültek be az eredményei. Pedig Sándor
István munkája mindmáig a legjelentősebb kísérlet a 18. század végi, 19. század
eleji magyar irodalom társadalomképének elemzésére. Az utóbbi években egyre
erőteljesebbnek tűnő, társadalomtörténeti megközelítésekhez kapcsolódó
irodalomtörténeti kutatások saját előzményeik egyik legérdekesebb hazai
előfutárát fedezhetik fel ebben a monográfiában.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
